Vinho Verde: Wines that Extend Beyond Summer
As summer transitions into fall, it’s an excellent time to rediscover the captivating offerings of Vinho Verde. Recent tastings, including one I hosted in Decanter’s Tasting Suite, revealed the evolving character of this wine region, showcasing its diverse terroir and winemaking styles.
Over the last decade, Vinho Verde has seen a remarkable transformation, driven by a resurgence of traditional practices among producers who are refining their approaches. While the light and bubbly variations remain popular, there’s a growing demand for complex expressions of this vibrant region.
If you’re looking to expand your collection, consider the Quinta de Linhares Grande Reserva Avesso 2016, a sophisticated example of longevity and classic winemaking. Another noteworthy choice is Aveleda’s Parcela do Roseiral 2024, which showcases the bold character of Alvarinho, partially fermented in oak. Additionally, Constantino Ramos’ Zafirah 2024 stands out as a refined and lively red option, exemplifying the region's depth.
These wines offer intricate textures and nuanced flavors that are perfect for pairing with autumn meals, inspiring enthusiasts to explore the rich landscapes and history of the Vinho Verde region.
Clemens Busch: Insights from Poland
In a recent visit to Poland for the Polskie Korki wine festival, I had the opportunity to meet renowned biodynamic winemaker Clemens Busch. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, this event has gained traction under the vision of restaurateur Lechosław Olszewski.
Busch participated as a judge and conducted a masterclass centered on Rieslings, emphasizing low-intervention techniques that resonate with many local producers. His Riesling vom grauen Schiefer 2024 showcases a delightful combination of honeyed elderflower and a creamy palate, making it a standout.
However, what truly captured my attention was the Marienburg GG 2024, which exhibits a rich complexity of wild herbs and bright fruits, perfectly balanced and refined. The Marienburg Fahrlay-Terrassen GG 2020, priced at £54.30, offers a unique mineral character that’s both zesty and spicy. Rounding off the tasting was the impressive 2011 Marienburg Falkenlay GG, revealing layers of tropical fruit and umami, underscoring the aging potential of these wines.
Celebrating 20 Years of Palladius
At a recent vertical tasting, renowned South African winemaker Eben Sadie reflected on two decades of his acclaimed white blend, Palladius. Starting this journey with the 2002 vintage, a blend of Chenin, Grenache Blanc, and others, he crafted a remarkable representation of Swartland’s rich geology.
Sadie noted how the early vintages challenged norms and set new standards. The 2003 vintage showcases a structure akin to aged white Rioja, while the 2007 introduction of Clairette added another layer of complexity. The standout 2009 vintage marked his transition to using pneumatic presses, and the 2013 vintage began a new chapter with fermentation in ceramic and concrete, revealing the evolution of his approach.
The current release, 2023, combines 13 grape varieties, delivering an impressive purity and herbal complexity that has earned it a spot among the finest in contemporary winemaking.
The Rise of Greek Wine in the UK
Today’s appreciation for Greek wines in the UK owes much to the work of Steve Daniel, who has been a tireless advocate in the industry. His recent tasting event at The Swan at Shakespeare’s Globe in London highlighted a diverse portfolio, featuring both established and emerging producers.
With beautiful weather setting the mood, attendees could explore a range of varietals. Strong recommendations include Assyrtiko and Xinomavro, but don’t overlook Vidiano, which Daniel predicts will be the next standout variety. The Oenops Vidiano 2024, priced at £21.90-£24.95, showcases rich textures of stone fruit, while the Idaia Winery’s Ocean Vidiano 2025 offers a refreshing contrast with crisp acidity and vibrant flavors.
Enjoying Summer Reds
This summer, I experienced a delightful contrast of red wines in distinct settings. One afternoon, I enjoyed the Viña Sol Fruity Red 2025 (£8.20 from Familia Torres) on a sunlit picnic table. This unoaked blend of Garnacha and Tempranillo brought forth refreshing notes of ripe berries, perfect for the warm weather.
Lately, during a tasting featuring wineries from British Columbia, I was introduced to the remarkable potential of Cabernet Franc from the Okanagan. The Mission Hill Family Estate’s Terroir Collection Cabernet Franc 2022 (£70) impressed with its dark berries and herbal undertones, deserving of its acclaim including a Silver medal in the 2025 Decanter World Wine Awards.
For anyone looking to expand their palate as the seasons change, these selections offer not just great flavors but also a glimpse into the evolving world of wine.
