This grape's immense popularity has led to two distinct celebrations. The first, known as #CabernetDay, was initiated by marketing expert Rick Bakas in 2010. Celebrated annually on the Thursday preceding Labor Day, the next occurrence will be on September 3 in 2026.

Accidental Origins

Interestingly, the existence of Cabernet Sauvignon is attributed to serendipity. In the 17th century, a Cabernet Franc vine fortuitously crossed paths with a nearby Sauvignon Blanc vine in Bordeaux. This unintentional combination yielded the grape we're familiar with today.

Its parentage remained a mystery until DNA testing in the 1990s uncovered the truth at the University of California, Davis. The findings showed that this prestigious red is, remarkably, half white.
